2009 - Fighting MRSA Feature

Healthcare professionals are looking to the floor for an effective method of infection control that combines the natural power of silver with state-of-the-art flooring systems from Flowcrete.

 

The Healthcare professionsla HHflooring manufacturer has joined forces with internationally renowned chemicals and performance materials company Perstorp Chemicals AB to utilise their Polygiene® compound to bring safe, clean flooring systems underfoot in the health care sector.

 

A special additive in Polygiene® emits ions of silver, which break down the cell walls of harmful micro-organisms. This helps prevent the spread of harmful bacteria, viruses and yeasts. The system is locked into the resin matrix of the flooring system for maximum efficiency.

 

Three years in development, Polygiene® is capable of killing MRSA and C.Diff – as well as other types of bacteria on contact – offering a major step forward in infection control.

 

These qualities also offer benefits for hospital food preparation areas, due to the ability to control salmonella and E-Coli.

 

Polygiene is being used in Flowcrete’s Flowfresh range of seamless systems, as well as the high-wearing seamless terrazzo Mondéco.

 

Although Polygiene effectively tackles harmful bacteria, viruses and funghi, it is completely safe for humans. There are no toxic elements involved, no recorded allergic reactions and production is environmentally friendly.

 

The process is invisible and remains active throughout the lifetime of the product, even when damaged or worn, unlike coatings or surface treatments.
